Paramount Gambles Big With Airbender

A recent LA Times Business article has revealed that not only has Paramount invested $150 million into the production of The Last Airbender, but also a gargantuan $130 million into the marketing campaign, making The Last Airbender more than twice as expensive as any of M. Night’s previous films! Paramount Chief Executive Brady Grey doesn’t seem worried.

“Like every filmmaker, Night has had his hits and misses, but I believed in his vision and that he could execute it,” Grey said, adding “It’s a bold step because he had to create a potential new family franchise.”

With an unprecedented cross-promotional marketing campaign between Viacom owned networks Nickelodeon,  MTV, Comedy Central, Spike TV, and CMT, one can hardly fault him for his optimism. However, Airbender does face stiff competition in the third entry in the Twilight Saga, Eclipse, opening a day earlier.

“I’m hoping after they see ‘Eclipse,’ they’ll come see our movie,” Shyamalan said.

I am really worried that the movie will underperform because of it’s strong competition! They should’ve pushed it back a few weeks so that Eclipse’s hype would die down!

  2. Luna Says:

I think it’ll def. be in competition with Eclipse, but you know the real “die hard” fans they’ll watch it anyway and they would have been ticked off. Anyway i still hope it’ll be a better success then twilight, you don’t have to ask me twice which movie i’d wanna see …

Eclipse? I am seeing the movie only because I admire Kristin as an actress . . . but Airbender will kick a**!!!!!!!!! I really hope it will. Tell everyone to go see it. I want it to beat out Eclipse so badly. At least we have the Twihards seeing Airbender because of Jackson. That’ll help, although it shouldn’t only be about that.
Hopw do you think the movies will do?

Yikes. The last time I remember something like this happening was with The Golden Compass, and that resulted in the next two movies not getting made. I would much prefer three lower-budget Avatar movies than one with really awesome special effects.

well…the Golden Compass I think suffered from more than just theater date, but that’s just my opinion^^

Lol, I can’t really wrap my head around the concept that Eclipse would be any kind of competition for The Last Airbender xD
